Yes - this is so true. The fear of repercussions for a "wrong" or "imprecise" answer - that alone is all you need to know. The feeling that if you say it "wrong," there will be a long and unpleasant car ride home- just the fear that your partner may find out, may know, may respond - that you are "supposed" to say it a certain way. It's quite telling.
