Well, yes - newsletter writers can gift you a subscription - and readers of pubs can also gift you a free year (and then you get a notice when that is about to expire and asked to sign up for paid) - anyway, Substack does a lot to try to help writers earn - and maybe this particular tactic is a bit much, but maybe after a year, someone finds your pub worth paying for
