This - the great writers do this. When I first read a Franzen novel, I was in awe - how did he write that? How does he know? (keen observation, lots of editing, etc...) - and there's a passage by Ann Patchett that still amazes me because it describes an experience exactly as I lived it - one paragraph and she captures it - not approximately, exactly.
