This is sound advice - it is important, I think, to note patterns, however. If you tell someone they are hurting you and they keep doing the thing that hurts, that's a red flag - either they want to hurt you OR they don't care. So, yes, only focus on the immediate, singular problem - but if problems keep happening, be aware and able to set your own boundaries - which may include leaving the relationship.
