This is a great plan - for me, each connection CAN be an opportunity. You could also set a time limit - so, say you'll go for 30 minutes - but also that you'll talk to at least 2 people before you go. That way, the event can have some meaning/purpose - who knows, you may find one fascinating person to talk with and stay beyond your set time. Again, you can leave after a short period, too - just set a limit and stick to it so you don't feel like your time was wasted.
