A Christmas conundrum

Life is about choices.

But for someone in the grip of substance use disorder, choices seem limited.

One choice stands as a top priority: Obtain your substance of choice.

I’ve written some about my own struggles with alcohol use. About choices I made that I wish I hadn’t. And about feeling like I didn’t have a choice.

So when I read a story about a Christmas choice with lasting consequences, I felt it — felt the pain of a choice you can’t unmake.

Orrin Onken weaves a tale of woe — and also of hope — in this holiday memory.

While he always had plenty of vodka, he neglected to get his then-wife even a pair of socks one Christmas.
