My Highest Earning Story in December was About Education Policy

But the other top earners were stories about writing

Yes, it’s time for the monthly report on which stories earned well.

I do this every month for two reasons:

  1. It forces me to look at what I’m writing and what is being read. This helps me know what appeals to readers and also how I might tweak my stories/headlines to gain more reads.
  2. As a writer, I like to learn about what other writers are doing that “works” for them. This is my contribution to that discussion.

Here are my top five earning stories from December:

The top earner was a post on teacher certification in Tennessee.

I write a lot about education issues — from a dissertation on school funding to news pieces on education politics and policy. So, I’m glad to see one of my education pieces getting some traction here on Medium.

In second and fourth place were stories I wrote about my experience on the creative writing platform Simily. Here’s one of them, which explains why I stopped publishing there — and why I don’t recommend it.

In third place was a story I wrote about my experience on NewsBreak. I’ve very much enjoyed writing there and found it to be a platform where I can consistently earn from my writing.

Finally, in fifth place was a story about my experience on Substack. I have two newsletters there and I have found it to be a very positive experience.

So, that’s it. My top stories in terms of earnings for December.

Happy New Year! Here’s to a great 2023 of reading and writing!
