My experience is that AA is evolving a bit in this regard - but certainly, I understand resistance to the program thanks to how it has been portrayed - that said, as the traditions state, "The only requirement for AA membership is a desire to stop drinking." I'm personally agnostic about choice of program - there are lots of options out there for people who want to stop drinking for whatever reason.
