My dad (an alcoholic) married a fellow alcoholic - after he'd had a few years of not drinking, a brief sort of recovery - he chose her, and chose to go back to drinking - from 65 to his death at 70, it was an endless stream of hospital stays, doctor visits, and the amputation of his left leg. On his last day alive, he asked his wife to bring him a drink - when she did, she found him dead from a heart attack. I don't want to die like that - I'm glad to have found a different path - and glad you did, too!
