My Biggest Substack Supporter is a Ghost

I wasn’t that surprised

In addition to my writing here at Medium, I write two Substacks — one on education policy and another on consumer finance.

These publications give me a chance to dig deeper on topics I enjoy learning, writing, and sharing about. And, turns out, there’s an audience for both — some of whom even pay for the content.

While I regularly notice the number of subscribers and the number of people who open my Substack emails, I don’t often dig too much into the detailed stats the platform offers.

I earn a small sum from both and it is enough for me to justify the time spent writing. That’s all I really want.

The other day, however, I took a look at all the stats.

Including one that told me who the biggest financial supporters of my writing are.

There was an email address and then a dollar amount. I smiled at some names I recognized, appreciative of their support of my work.

At the top of the list — and with a dollar amount significantly greater than the number two supporter — my dad.

I remember him signing up for both when I’d started. But, otherwise, I hadn’t paid much attention.
