I think online dating has definitely changed the scene. But I also think basic respect goes a long way. If a man is unsure/unclear about a "signal," just ask - and if she says no, move on. I've heard horror stories about guys who won't take "no" or who pester/persist long after a woman has clearly said she has no romantic interest.
