I think of this often - of a time in college - when the only phone was in my room and I screened calls with an answering machine. I had to go to the library to check my email (which I did only once on most days) - I sat for hours reading next to my favorite buildings - and there was no expectation that I would be in touch - no texting back within minutes, no endless scrolling - and I do long to have days like that again - I've researched retreats that are wifi-free and places where I could go and just leave my phone off
