I recall doing something similar - and also recall how, 20 years on, I'd made a big, big mess (yes, a relationship takes two parties to make it work) - but the big mess was mine in terms of the making. Hindsight is 20/20 - I'm not sure what I'd say to that hopeful man - out of that marriage came my amazing daughter. Wisdom comes from experience - sometimes very, very painful experience.
