I agree that commenting makes a HUGE difference. In fact, before I started commenting regularly, I wasn't gaining much traction - sure, I'd read and even highlight interesting bits - but until I started commenting, my follows and reads remained fairly stagnant. Plus, the community you get from engaging - it's great!
