Great topic. I think a ring with meaning says a lot - maybe a family heirloom, for example. The way you are asked matters, too. Personally, I'd rather go an amazing trip/vacation with a new spouse and give them a smaller/less flashy ring - experiences are priceless and sharing dedicated time will become more rare after marriage.
