Focus Your Writing by Focusing on What Works

One Writer’s Plan for a More Productive 2022

One Medium writer, Burk, tells his story about a plan to be more focused in 2022.

The bottom line: He’s writing on multiple platforms including a blog he’s had for 13 years. Now, he plans to focus on Medium as a top priority. His post talks about two other platforms often mentioned here: Vocal and NewsBreak.

For Burk, Vocal is mostly a waste of time. From what I’ve read from others here and elsewhere, Vocal is ok, but not great for money or community engagement.

Burk is also skeptical of NewsBreak. He says:

NewsBreak’s striking system is… severely flawed. You get strikes for so many (truly unproblematic) things.

Editorial kind of sucks. You have to be very careful with everything.

Pay is abysmal compared to Medium. You’re lucky to earn a few bucks for tens of thousands of views. At least in my experience.

And don’t get me started on the comments. It’s wild out there.

I’ve been on NewsBreak for just about a month now, and the experience has (so far) been positive. We’ll see how it goes in the long run, but I’m encouraged at this point. Medium is, for me, a great place to write more in-depth stories. But, for pieces that can be made into 250–400 word news bits, converting them to NewsBreak stories seems to make sense. More later as I see how the earnings go.

Have you tried NewsBreak or Vocal? Thoughts on these platforms as part of your writing “empire?”
