A grooming routine escape

Routine can be powerful.

It can help us form habits that shape our lives.

How we start the day can set the mood for how we greet the day and those we encounter during it.

I’ve written before about my shaving routine — and about the pleasant breaks from it.

While I was pleasantly surprised by my recent work trip and Mr. Taylor’s shaving cream, my Sundays are a bit more predictable.

On Sunday, I sleep in a bit — and still get up in the morning in time to get ready for and go to church.

On Sunday, I shave with a shaving bowl and a brush.

On Sunday, I shave with two passes — one with the grain, a second lather, and a pass against the grain. This habit makes my face especially smooth — to me, offering a nice finishing touch to my grooming routine.

On Sunday, in the warmer months, I’ve begun using Taylor of Old Bond Steet’s “Eton College” shave cream.

A small amount lathered up with water and a shaving brush goes a long, long way. Enough for a third pass if I wanted.

Usually, two is plenty.

I’m left fresh and smooth and with a scent I can capture even a few hours later.

I’m curious about other morning routines — on thoughts about ways to start the day to best prepare for the coming onslaught of people, situations, and life.
