Drinking in Church with Adam Clayton

Oh, the stories we tell

Ok, so in spite of my previous struggles with alcohol, I’ve never consumed alcohol at or in a church — and the church I attend now even uses grape juice instead of wine for communion, so no alcohol there.

I’ve also never been in church with U2’s Adam Clayton. Though, I’d say being at a U2 show is something like being in church — being on another plane. I’ve seen several of their live shows and it is a spiritual experience each time.

Were I to talk with Adam Clayton, I’d love to hear his stories about being in a great band. But, I’d also like to ask him about his recovery journey. He is, by his own admission, the least religious member of U2. And yet he admits a higher power helped him find and helps him maintain his sobriety.

He’s also said that while Bono and The Edge are sort of fanatical about religion (and especially so in the early days of the band), he himself can’t deny that something special happens in the band’s live shows — something other dimensional.

All of which sets up my monthly look back at the top 5 stories.

In January, the stories that helped me earn that sweet Medium cash focused on alcohol use, recovery, church, and a particularly strong memory from my early adulthood.
