I’ve read all kinds of advice about checking your stats as a writer.

I’ve read that you should just ignore them — especially at first — and just write.

I’ve read that you should check them daily and see what you can learn about the content that is getting traction.

I’ve read that you should do monthly analysis and use that to refine your work — change up the headlines, edit stories and republish, etc.

But I’ve never actually danced when I’ve checked my stats.

My habit: I check them every morning as I’m getting ready to respond to comments on my articles.

I do like to see what’s working — how my earnings are doing, etc. This goes for Medium and for NewsBreak as well as my Substacks.

I also do a monthly report on how my earnings are going and comparing my earnings on NewsBreak to those here at Medium.
