A Tennessee Battle Over Affirmative Action
Attorney General threatens businesses with inclusive policies
Tennessee’s Attorney General joined a letter from 12 other GOP attorneys general that called on the nation’s largest companies to cease affirmative action policies.
The letter threatened legal action if these top businesses failed to heed the warning.
The Chair of Tennessee’s Senate Democratic Caucus, London Lamar, responded noting that the threat could have a devastating impact on Black Tennessee workers and business owners:
“There is an appalling lack of representation in corporate America. For instance, there are only eight Black CEOs leading Fortune 500 companies — and that’s a record-high number,” said Lamar, who is also the chairwoman of the Senate Democratic Caucus.
“If Tennessee’s Republican attorney general succeeds in bullying companies into ending their programs to hire and work with Black Americans, the consequences will be devastating,” she said.
